Rebecca Borders Mayor Tom Griffin Council Member Russell Holmes Council Member Mickey Hopper Deputy Mayor Jarom Fertic Council Member We welcome you to our great city of St. Cloud. Since it was founded in April 1909 as a retirement community for Civil War Union Soldiers, St. Cloud has faced many changes. Some were due to man-made disasters and some by natural disasters, such as the hotel fires, the Great Depression, World Wars I and II, and major U.S. epidemics. Through all of these, this great city has continued to thrive and grow. Our city is known as the Soldier City in honor of the Civil War Union Soldiers and was incorporated in January 1911. St. Cloud residents celebrated their centennial year in 2009 with a large fun-filled day of events including fireworks. Though we are presently amidst an economic situation, City of St. Cloud has maintained a balanced budget and contin-ues to have a positive budget process annually. Our City employees maintain a positive morale that is recognized by the citizens they interact with on a daily basis. The employees and citizens demonstrate the attitude and the core of the city greatness by working together to promote and improve their 2 homes and families. The growth the city of St. Cloud has seen is planned care-fully by City staff and council. It is controlled by annexation based on the supply of services to the expanding urban areas. Growth is demand-based, and City services have been ex-tended to meet the needs of new residents, as well as to provide economies of scale for the operation of City of St. Cloud utilities and services. Eleven years ago, the city’s population was just over 20,000; today, the city’s population is more than 35,000. Since 2000, the city’s land area has grown from 9.74 square miles to 19 square miles. City Council and staff work hard to ensure that residents enjoy celebrating small-town life, coupled with the benefits of a growing and full-service city. Though the city continues to grow, our slogan remains “Cel-ebrating Small Town Life.” The municipality continues planning for growth in a responsible man-ner to maintain the quality of life and small-town feeling that we all love. Our downtown area is maintained in the small-town environment of days gone by and in our outer neighborhoods small-town feeling of community is stressed. Residents and visitors enjoy a beautiful Lakefront Park with a marina that boasts the beautiful Marina Building with banquet facilities, a boat-docking area, children’s park that includes a splash pad, and a lakeside walk-ing and bike trail. Residents also relish a wonderful downtown shopping area, full fire and police services, public utilities, public schools, churches, hospi-tal, library, and numerous parks and recreational programs for our entire community. Truly, we have something for everyone – for the young and the young-at-heart. St. Cloud keeps the history of our community alive with events to remind us of how our city was founded and a great historical museum. We welcome you to the St. Cloud family and hope that you will find our magnificent city to be friendly and accommodating. Regards, Mayor Rebecca Borders
